"O" with Short-U Sound

The letter "o" in "covert" can hav both Long O sound and Short U sound.
The letter "o" in "donjon" can hav both Short O sound and Short U sound.
The letter "o" in "donkey" can hav both Short O sound and Short U sound.
The letter "o" in "from" can hav both Short O sound and Short U sound.
The letter "o" in "hover" can hav both Short O sound and Short U sound.
The letter "o" in "monetary" can hav both Short O sound and Short U sound.
The letter "o" in "pommel" can hav both Short O sound and Short U sound.


It must be difficult to consistently use the letter "U" for Short-U sound.



Sorry if I may sound illogical, but I don't think "onion" can be respelled like "unnion".

I don't think "other" can be respelled like "uther". It seems that "uther", like "Uther", has a long U, not a short one.

Do we hav to spell "some" and "sum" the same? How about "one" and "won"? If homophones wer spelled the same in any case, it would be good for writers, but it would not be good for readers who ar familiar with traditional spelling. And we read more than we write.
